Erkki Karu

Director, producer, actor

A son of carpenter. Mr. Karu worked in bakery and studied the work of goldsmith before he started his career in the theatre world. In 1919 Karu founded (with Carl Fager and Teuvo Puro) the film studio Suomi-Filmi Oy. In 1933 he left the company and founded (with T. J. Särkkä) another film studio, Oy Suomen Filmiteollisuus Ab. Karu directed 18 and produced 40 movies. After his sudden death T.J. Särkkä continued his work as producer of Oy Suomen Filmiteollisuus.

Mr. Karu's son, Olavi, was composer.
